DSC Renewal Before Expiry: What to Do, How Portals Are Affected

On this page

When your Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) nears expiry, the word “renewal” is a little misleading. You are not extending the old certificate. You are applying for a fresh certificate under a fresh Certifying Authority (CA) verification, and then re-registering that new certificate on every portal where you use it. This post explains what to do and how the portal registrations are affected.

Renewal is really a fresh certificate

The CA verifies your identity through one of the approved routes: Aadhaar eKYC biometric, paper-based application with physical verification, or eKYC OTP combined with video KYC. A renewed certificate is issued after this verification clears, exactly like a new one.

Re-register on every portal

Each portal registration is separate, so after you receive the new certificate you must register it again everywhere you used the old one.

GST. Register the new DSC against the authorised signatory’s PAN on the GST portal.

MCA. MCA21 V3 requires directors, managers, secretaries and practising professionals to register their DSC as business users. Register the new certificate in each role.

Income tax. Register the new DSC on the income tax portal before you sign and upload any further forms.

eProc. A DSC mapped to one account cannot be remapped to another; it can only be inactivated. If your renewed certificate is a new DSC, enrol it on eProc as you did the first time.

Class 2 holders

Class 2 issuance was discontinued from 1 January 2021, so an expired Class 2 certificate cannot be renewed as Class 2. New certificates are Class 3. If you still hold a Class 2 certificate, treat renewal as a fresh Class 3 application.

A note on encryption keys

The eProc portal’s renewal advisory asks tender inviting authorities to ensure that during DSC renewal the old encryption key is retained and not deleted from the token, because existing tenders due for opening cannot be decrypted without it. Formatting DSC tokens should be avoided; the portal’s ideal option is a new physical token each time a DSC is renewed or purchased. If you hold a combo certificate and bid on eProc, keep this in mind when you renew.

Timing

Do not leave renewal to the last week. We do not publish a number of days before expiry, because the right timing depends on the CA’s verification process, which varies. What we can say is that an expired DSC stops signing, so the gap between expiry and a new certificate is downtime you want to avoid. Start the process before your current certificate expires and re-register on each portal as soon as the new one is issued.

Still have a question? Chat on WhatsApp

Can I keep the same token when I renew?
Only if it is a FIPS 140-3 token. Since 21 September 2026 the Controller of Certifying Authorities allows renewals only on FIPS 140-3 tokens, and any token bought before then will not work. If you use eProc, keep the old token too: it still holds the encryption key for bids you already submitted.
Do I need to re-register on GST after renewal?
Yes. Each portal registration is separate. After you receive the new certificate, register it on GST, MCA, the income tax portal and eProc as you did the first time.
What about the eProc mapping after renewal?
A DSC mapped to one account cannot be remapped to another; it can only be inactivated. If your new certificate is a new DSC, enrol it on eProc as you did before.
Can an expired Class 2 DSC be renewed as Class 2?
Class 2 issuance was discontinued from 1 January 2021, so an expired Class 2 cannot be renewed as Class 2. New certificates are Class 3.
