What is a Class 3 DSC?
A Class 3 digital signature certificate (DSC) is the signing certificate most Indian portals accept. It is issued by a licensed Certifying Authority after verifying your identity through Aadhaar OTP and video KYC. The certificate lives on a USB token and signs your returns, forms and bids.
Do I need a Class 2 certificate instead?
No. New certificates are Class 3. Class 2 issuance was discontinued from 1 January 2021, so a Class 2 certificate is something you can only come across on an old token, and it keeps working there until it expires.
Which validity should I choose, one year, two years or three?
One, two or three years, whichever covers you until you next reissue. A certificate cannot be renewed once it expires, it is reissued as a new one, so a longer validity means fewer of those. The application is the same either way, and the choice does not change what a portal will accept.
Do I need the combo certificate?
Not for Rajasthan eProc, which accepts a Class 3 signing DSC on its own. Other states tender portals and India-wide portals ask for encryption as well, and ICEGATE works with the combo, so take the combo if you bid outside Rajasthan.
What is an encryption certificate, and when do I need the combo?
Signing is the half of the certificate that signs your returns, forms and bids. The combo adds an encryption certificate on the same token, which tender portals of other states, India-wide portals and ICEGATE ask for. If your work is GST, MCA, Income Tax, EPFO or Rajasthan eProc, the signing certificate on its own is enough.
