GST DSC in Udaipur: Who Must Use It and Who Can Use EVC Instead

If you run a business in Udaipur and file GST returns, you have probably been asked whether you need a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). The answer depends on your entity type. This post sets out who must use a DSC, who can use EVC or Aadhaar eSign instead, and how to get a Class 3 DSC in Udaipur.

Who must use a DSC

GST FAQ 2.12 states that a DSC is mandatory for Public Limited, Private Limited, Unlimited, Foreign Company, LLP, Foreign LLP and PSU. If your business is one of these, the authorised signatory must sign GST returns and forms using a DSC.

Who can use EVC or Aadhaar eSign instead

Taxpayers who are not on the mandatory list, including most proprietors, can use EVC (Electronic Verification Code) or Aadhaar eSign to sign returns. If you are a proprietor and someone has told you a DSC is compulsory, check the GST portal’s FAQ first; for most proprietors it is not.

What the portal accepts

The GST portal accepts PAN based Class II and III DSC for signing. New certificates are Class 3. The portal’s registration tutorial walks through registering the DSC against the authorised signatory’s PAN.

Who signs for the company

The authorised signatory whose name is registered in the GST profile signs using their DSC. If the signatory changes, the new signatory’s DSC must be registered on the portal before they can sign. Each portal registration is separate, so a DSC used for GST must also be registered on MCA, the income tax portal and so on.
